Schoolcraft County is one of the 83 county of Michigan, located towards the Midwestern Region (East North Central) of United States. In 2000, the population was 8903. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 8220, It is fourth least populous county in Michigan. It covers total area of 1883.69 mi˛ (4878.73 sq km), of which, 1178.11 square miles (3051.29 sq km) of it is land and 705.58 square miles (1827.44 sq km) of it is water, giving it the 13th largest by total area among Michigan's county.

According to 2000 Census Bureau, there were 8903 people, 3606 households, and 2498 families living in the county. The population density was 7.6 people per square mile (2.93/km˛), giving it the third least densely populated county among the Michigan. There were 5700 housing units at an average density of 4.8 per square mile (1.85/km˛). It has an average household size was 2.36 persons, and the average family size was 2.84 persons. In the county the population was distributed as follows: 22.8% under the age of 18, 6.8% from 18 to 24, 26.1% from 25 to 44, 25.8% from 45 to 64, and 18.6% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 100.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 99.2 males. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 8220, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 7347 White, 36 Black or African American, 554 American Indian, 32 Asian, 0 Native Hawaiian, and 251 from two or more races.
