Saxony-Anhalt (Sachsen-Anhalt) borders on the states of Lower Saxony to the northwest,
Brandenburg to the east, The Free State of Saxony to the southeast and Thuringia to the southwest. Saxony-Anhalt is the eighth largest federal state of Germany by area, with an area of 20,447 sq km (7,895 sq mi). It is eleventh largest in population among the Germany, with 2.43 million inhabitants. There are 119 inhabitants living in Saxony-Anhalt per sq km. It is divided up into 11 districts and 3 urban districts. Its capital is Magdeburg.

The population of Saxony-Anhalt is
2,412,472 (2008), of which 1,232,520 is female and 1,179,952 is male, total population down 1.2 per cent over a year earlier. This was due to more deaths than births. In 2006, the birth rate was 2.6 per 1000 and death rate was 5 per 1000 in 2006. In 2008, 10.14 percent of the population under the age of 15, rose from 10.00 per cent over a previous year. The proportion of people aged 65 and over rose from 22.54 per cent to 23.13 per cent. Correspondingly, the median age (aged 15-64) of the population fell from 67.46 to 66.73 over the same period. The overall dependency ratio is 498 per 1000 in 2008. The Sex ratio of total population is 0.957 male(s)/female.
Saxony-Anhalt is the twelth largest in
both nominal GDP and GDP (PPP) among the Germany. Its nominal GDP per capita is €20,100, it is ranked as the 13th largest economy by nominal GDP per capita in Germany, its GDP purchasing power parity (PPP) per capita is €19,500, ranked 13th among the Germany. Total GDP of Saxony-Anhalt is €48.7 billion, of which service sector contributes around 69.53%, industry 29.09%, and agriculture 1.38%. Its real annual growth rate is 1.8 in 2006, rose from -0.2 over a previous year. Its income of household was 13,770 Euros per inhabitant in 2006. The unemployment rate has recently decreased from 22.4% in 2004 to 15.7% in 2007.

Regarding to the state road network, in 2008 there were 10,951 km of roadways in Saxony-Anhalt, including 383 km of motorways. In 2007, about 1.33 million passenger cars (equal to 527 cars per 1,000 people) and 1.48 million road good vehicles circulated on the national road network. The state railway network, in 2008 totalled 2,388 km of which 1,121 km is electrified. The state inland waterways network comprised 577 km of navigable rivers and channells.
There were 2.04 million tourists arrivals in 2008. Over 0.42 millions pupils and students, 17% of the total population, are in the education system. Of which, percentage of enrollment student are in, 15% pre-primary, 16% primary, 29% lower secondary, 22% higher secondary, 4% post secondary and 14% tertiary.
