Sawyer County is a county located in Wisconsin, in the Midwestern Region (East North Central) of United States. The population of the county was 16196 as per the 2000 census data. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 17117, making it the 16th least populous county in Wisconsin. The county comprises an area of 1350.32 square miles (3497.31 sq km), of which, 1256.42 square miles (3254.11 sq km) of it is land and 93.9 square miles (243.2 sq km) of it is water, makes it the eighth largest by total area in Wisconsin.

The population density was 12.9 people per square mile (4.98/kmē), it is seventh least densely populated county in Wisconsin. Age range in the county was well distributed with 24.1% under the age of 18, 6% from 18 to 24, 24.6% from 25 to 44, 27.4% from 45 to 64, and 17.9% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 101.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 101 males. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 17117, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 13957 White, 93 Black or African American, 2779 American Indian, 50 Asian, 3 Native Hawaiian, and 235 from two or more races.
