Sault Ste. Marie City is a city located in the Chippewa County, Michigan, United States. As per the 2000 census, city has a population of 16542 inhabitants. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 14087, making it the 76th most populous in Michigan. It is spread over 20.2 sq mi (52.32 kmē), of which, 14.82 square miles (38.38 kmē ) of it is land and 5.38 square miles (13.93 kmē) of it is water, makes it the 39th largest by total area in Michigan. It is ranks eighth in the size of its inland waterways in Michigan.

As of the census of 2000, there were 16542 people, 5742 households, and 3301 families residing in the city. The population density was 1116.3 people per square mile (431.01/kmē), it is Michigan's 322nd most densely populated city. There were 6237 housing units at an average density of 420.9 per square mile (162.51/kmē). The average household size was 2.28 people, and the average family size was 2.92 people. In the Sault Ste. Marie City, 19.4% of the population was under the age of 18, 18.1% were 18 to 24, 31.9% were 25 to 44, 18.2% were 45 to 64, and 12.5% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 122 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 128.3 males. The median age was 32.8 years, the median age of male residents at 31.6 and the median age of female residents at 34.9. The racial makeup of the city was 12239 White, 1077 Black or African American, 2270 American Indian, 107 Asian, 9 Native Hawaiian, 763 from two or more races and 77 Ohter races.
