Sargent County is a United States county located in the United States of North Dakota. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 4366 inhabitants. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 4048, It is the 28th most populous county in the U.S. state of North Dakota. The county extends throughout a territory of 867.09 mi˛ (2245.75 sq km ), of which, 858.75 square miles (2224.15 sq km) of it is land and 8.34 square miles (21.6 sq km) of it is water, makes it the eighth smallest by total area in North Dakota.

As of the census of 2000, there were 4366 people in the county, organized into 1786 households, and 1243 families residing in the county. The population density was 5.1 people per square mile (1.97/km˛), making it the 19th most densely populated county in North Dakota. There were 2016 housing units at an average density of 2.3 per square mile (0.89/km˛). The average household size was 2.43 persons, and the average family size was 2.99 persons. Age range in the county was well distributed with 26.5% under the age of 18, 5.3% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 25.7% from 45 to 64, and 16.9% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 110.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 110.1 males. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 4048, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 98.44% White, 0.1% Black or African American, 0.62% American Indian, 0.1% Asian, 0% Native Hawaiian, and 0.74% from two or more races.
