Sarasota City is a city in the Sarasota County, Florida, United States. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 52715 inhabitants. Its population was estimated at 52340 in July 2008, It is the 47th largest in terms of population. It covers total area of 25.93 mi˛ (67.16 sq km), of which, 14.89 square miles (38.56 sq km) of it is land and 11.04 square miles (28.59 sq km) of it is water, making it Florida's 57th largest by total area. It is ranks 20 in the size of its inland waterways in Florida.

As of the census of 2000, there were 52715 people in the city, organized into 23427 households, and 12076 families living in the city. The population density was 3539.8 people per square mile (1366.72/km˛), it is the 212th most densely populated city in the U.S. state of Florida. There were 26898 housing units at an average density of 1806.4 per square mile (697.45/km˛). The average household size was 2.12 and the average family size was 2.81.
