Santa Fe County is a county located in New Mexico, in the Western Region (Mountain) of United States. The population of county in 2000 stood at 129292 as per the Census data. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 143937, giving it the third largest population among New Mexico's county. The county encompasses an area of 1910.79 square miles (4948.92 square kilometre ), of which, 1909.19 square miles (4944.78 square kilometre) of it is land and 1.6 square miles (4.14 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the fifth smallest by area in the U.S. state of New Mexico.

As of the census of 2000, there were 129292 people, 52482 households, and 32787 families residing in the county. The population density was 67.7 people per square mile (26.14/kmē), it is New Mexico's third most densely populated county. There were 57701 housing units at an average density of 30.2 per square mile (11.66/kmē). The average household size was 2.42 persons, and the average family size was 3.01 persons. In the county Age distribution was 24.1% under the age of 18, 8.1% from 18 to 24, 29.7% from 25 to 44, 27.3% from 45 to 64, and 10.8% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 95.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.4 males. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 143937, The racial makeup of the county was 133049 White, 1888 Black or African American, 4959 American Indian, 1722 Asian, 174 Native Hawaiian, and 2145 from two or more races.
