Santa Cruz County is one of the 15 county of Arizona, located towards the Western Region (Mountain) of United States. Santa Cruz County had an official population of 38381 in 2000. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 42923, making it Arizona's fourth smallest county. It has total area of 1238.11 square miles (3206.69 sq km), of which, 1237.63 square miles (3205.45 sq km) of it is land and 0.47 square miles (1.22 sq km) of it is water, it is the smallest in terms of geographical size.

As of the census of 2000, there were 38381 residents, 11809 households, and 9511 families in the county. The population density was 31 people per square mile (11.97/kmē), it is the fourth most densely populated county in the U.S. state of Arizona. There were 13036 housing units at an average density of 10.5 per square mile (4.05/kmē). The average household size was 3.23 and the average family size was 3.66. Age range in the county was well distributed with 33.6% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 26.6% from 25 to 44, 20.8% from 45 to 64, and 10.7% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 91.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.2 males. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 42923, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 97.05% White, 0.68% Black or African American, 0.99% American Indian, 0.64% Asian, 0.11% Native Hawaiian, and 0.53% from two or more races.
