The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 1764499, It is the sixth most populous county in the U.S. state of California. It is spread over 1304.01 mi˛ (3377.37 square kilometre), of which, 1290.69 square miles (3342.87 square kilometre ) of it is land and 13.32 square miles (34.5 square kilometre) of it is water, making it California's 38th largest county by total area.

The population density was 1303.6 people per square mile (503.32/km˛), making it the seventh most densely populated county in California. There were 579329 housing units at an average density of 448.9 per square mile (173.32/km˛). The average household size was 2.92 people, and the average family size was 3.41 people. In the county Age distribution was 24.7% under the age of 18, 9.3% from 18 to 24, 35.4% from 25 to 44, 21% from 45 to 64, and 9.5% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 97.3 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 98.2 females. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 1764499, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 1094681 White, 50802 Black or African American, 13892 American Indian, 550242 Asian, 7698 Native Hawaiian, and 47184 from two or more races.
