The county spans an area of 3789.08 mi˛ (9813.67 sq km), of which, 2737.01 square miles (7088.82 sq km) of it is land and 1052.07 square miles (2724.85 sq km) of it is water, making it California's 16th largest county by total area. It is ranks first in the size of its inland waterways in California.

In the county Age distribution was 24.9% under the age of 18, 13.3% from 18 to 24, 29% from 25 to 44, 20.1% from 45 to 64, and 12.7% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 99.9 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 101.9 females. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 405396, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 359480 White, 9659 Black or African American, 6734 American Indian, 18388 Asian, 977 Native Hawaiian, and 10158 from two or more races.
