Sanilac County is a county located in Michigan, in the Midwestern Region (East North Central) of United States. It is home to over 44547 people (2000 census). As of July 2008, the estimated population was 43024, giving it the 39th largest population among Michigan's county. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1590.22 miē (4118.65 kmē), of which, 963.8 square miles (2496.23 kmē) of it is land and 626.42 square miles (1622.42 kmē) of it is water, it is the 18th largest by area in the U.S. state of Michigan.

As of the census of 2000, there were 44547 residents, 16871 households, and 12169 families in the county. The population density was 46.2 people per square mile (17.84/kmē), giving it the 54th most densely populated county among the Michigan. There were 21314 housing units at an average density of 22.1 per square mile (8.53/kmē). It has an average household size was 2.6 persons, and the average family size was 3.08 persons. In the county the population was spread out, with 26.9% under the age of 18, 7.6% from 18 to 24, 27% from 25 to 44, 23% from 45 to 64, and 15.4% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 98.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.8 males. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 43024, The racial makeup of the county was 42048 White, 201 Black or African American, 174 American Indian, 133 Asian, 3 Native Hawaiian, and 465 from two or more races.
