Sanibel City is one of the city of Lee County, Florida, located towards the Southern Region (South Atlantic) of United States. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 6064 inhabitants. Its population was estimated at 5645 in July 2008, It is the 373rd largest in terms of population. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 33.16 sq mi (85.88 sq km), of which, 17.21 square miles (44.57 sq km) of it is land and 15.96 square miles (41.34 sq km) of it is water, giving it the 39th largest by total area among Florida. It is ranks 13 in the size of its inland waterways in Florida.

As of the census of 2000, there were 6064 residents, 3049 households, and 2125 families in the city. The population density was 352.4 people per square mile (136.06/kmē), making its Florida's 107th least densely populated city. There were 7075 housing units at an average density of 411.1 per square mile (158.73/kmē). The average household size was 1.99 people, and the average family size was 2.33 people. In the Sanibel City, 10.1% of the population was under the age of 18, 1.7% were 18 to 24, 12.4% were 25 to 44, 35.8% were 45 to 64, and 40% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 90.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.9 males. The median age is 60.5 years, the median age of male residents at 61.1 and the median age of female residents at 60. The racial makeup of the city was 97.99% White, 0.94% Black or African American, 0.08% American Indian, 0.33% Asian, 0.05% Native Hawaiian, 0.49% from two or more races and 0.12% Other races.
