Sangamon County, Illinois is a county located in the Midwestern Region (East North Central) of United States. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 188951 inhabitants. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 194925, making it the tenth most populous county in Illinois. It is spread over 877.01 sq mi (2271.45 sq km), of which, 868.18 square miles (2248.58 sq km ) of it is land and 8.82 square miles (22.84 sq km) of it is water, it is the tenth largest by area in the U.S. state of Illinois.

The population density was 217.6 people per square mile (84.02/kmē), it is 12th most densely populated county in Illinois. There were 85459 housing units at an average density of 98.4 per square mile (37.99/kmē). The average household size was 2.36 and the average family size was 2.97. In the county the population was spread out, with 25% under the age of 18, 8.1% from 18 to 24, 29.7% from 25 to 44, 23.7% from 45 to 64, and 13.5% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 91.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.3 males. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 194925, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 86.02% White, 10.92% Black or African American, 0.23% American Indian, 1.31% Asian, 0.03% Native Hawaiian, and 1.48% from two or more races.
