It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 712690, It is the 14th largest in terms of population. The county has a total area of 741.01 square miles (1919.21 square kilometre), of which, 449.07 square miles (1163.09 square kilometre) of it is land and 291.95 square miles (756.15 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the sixth smallest by area in the U.S. state of California.

The population's age distribution was 22.9% under the age of 18, 7.9% from 18 to 24, 33.2% from 25 to 44, 23.5% from 45 to 64, and 12.5% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 97.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.6 males.
