San Luis Obispo County is one of the 58 county of California, located towards the Western Region (Pacific) of United States. As of 2000 the population was 246681. Its population was estimated at 265297 in July 2008, making it the 23rd most populous county in California. The county comprises an area of 3615.54 mi˛ (9364.21 sq km), of which, 3304.32 square miles (8558.15 sq km) of it is land and 311.22 square miles (806.06 sq km) of it is water, it is the 18th largest by area in the U.S. state of California. It is ranks eighth in the size of its inland waterways in California.

In the county Population was distributed with 21.7% under the age of 18, 13.6% from 18 to 24, 27% from 25 to 44, 23.3% from 45 to 64, and 14.5% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 105.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 105.2 males. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 265297, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 241140 White, 5601 Black or African American, 2974 American Indian, 8500 Asian, 357 Native Hawaiian, and 6725 from two or more races.
