San Francisco County is a United States county located in the United States of California. In 2000, the population was 776733. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 808976, making it California's 11th largest county. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 231.92 mi˛ (600.67 square kilometre), of which, 46.69 square miles (120.93 square kilometre) of it is land and 185.22 square miles (479.72 square kilometre) of it is water, making it the smallest by size in California.

As of the census of 2000, there were 776733 people, 329700 households, and 145186 families living in the county. The population density was 16634.4 people per square mile (6422.58/km˛), it is the most populated county in terms of population density. There were 346527 housing units at an average density of 7421.2 per square mile (2865.34/km˛). The average household size was 2.3 and the average family size was 3.22. In the county the population is diverse age-wise, with 14.5% under the age of 18, 9.1% from 18 to 24, 40.5% from 25 to 44, 22.3% from 45 to 64, and 13.7% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 103.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 103.1 males. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 808976, The racial makeup of the county was 470305 White, 54664 Black or African American, 4463 American Indian, 252856 Asian, 3925 Native Hawaiian, and 22763 from two or more races.
