San Diego County is a county in the United States of California. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 2813833 inhabitants. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 3001072, It is the third most populous county in the U.S. state of California. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 4525.52 sq mi (11721.04 kmē), of which, 4199.89 square miles (10877.67 kmē) of it is land and 325.62 square miles (843.35 kmē) of it is water, makes it the tenth largest by total area in California. It is ranks seventh in the size of its inland waterways in California.

As of the census of 2000, there were 2813833 people, 994677 households, and 663170 families residing in the county. The population density was 670 people per square mile (258.69/kmē), it would be the ninth most densely populated county in the U.S. state of California. There were 1040149 housing units at an average density of 247.7 per square mile (95.64/kmē). The average household size was 2.73 persons, and the average family size was 3.29 persons. In the county the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 11.3% from 18 to 24, 32% from 25 to 44, 19.8% from 45 to 64, and 11.2% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 101.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 99.7 males. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 3001072, The racial makeup of the county was 2387018 White, 166080 Black or African American, 30888 American Indian, 309274 Asian, 16173 Native Hawaiian, and 91639 from two or more races.
