Sampson County is a United States county located in the United States of North Carolina. The county has a population of 60161 as per the 2000 census data. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 63927, It is 38th most populous county in North Carolina. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 947.45 square miles (2453.88 sq km), of which, 945.45 square miles (2448.7 sq km) of it is land and 2.01 square miles (5.21 sq km) of it is water, making it North Carolina's eighth largest county by total area.

In the county the population is diverse age-wise, with 25.8% under the age of 18, 9.4% from 18 to 24, 29.7% from 25 to 44, 22.3% from 45 to 64, and 12.8% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 98.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.9 males. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 63927, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 43621 White, 18040 Black or African American, 1204 American Indian, 296 Asian, 158 Native Hawaiian, and 608 from two or more races.
