Salem County is one of the 21 county of New Jersey, located towards the Northeastern Region (Mid-Atlantic) of United States. The population of the county was 64285 as per the 2000 census data. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 66141, giving it the smallest population among New Jersey's county. It is spread over 372.57 miē (964.95 kmē), of which, 337.88 square miles (875.11 kmē ) of it is land and 34.69 square miles (89.85 kmē) of it is water, giving it the tenth largest by total area among New Jersey's county. It is ranks sixth in the size of its inland waterways in New Jersey.

As of the census of 2000, there were 64285 residents, 24295 households, and 17371 families in the county. The population density was 190.3 people per square mile (73.48/kmē), making it the least densely populated county in New Jersey. There were 26158 housing units at an average density of 77.4 per square mile (29.88/kmē). It has an average household size was 2.6 persons, and the average family size was 3.08 persons. In the county Population was distributed with 25.6% under the age of 18, 7.8% from 18 to 24, 27.9% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.5% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 93.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.2 males. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 66141, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 54256 White, 10091 Black or African American, 271 American Indian, 556 Asian, 28 Native Hawaiian, and 939 from two or more races.
