According to the latest population census dating back to 2000, the Sacramento County is home to 1223499 inhabitants. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 1394154, making it California's eighth largest county. The county has a total area of 995.48 sq mi (2578.28 kmē), of which, 965.65 square miles (2501.02 kmē) of it is land and 29.83 square miles (77.26 kmē) of it is water, it is the 16th smallest in terms of geographical size.

As of the census of 2000, there were 1223499 people in the county, organized into 453602 households, and 297596 families living in the county. The population density was 1267 people per square mile (489.19/kmē), giving it the eighth most densely populated county among the California. There were 474814 housing units at an average density of 491.7 per square mile (189.85/kmē). The average household size was 2.64 persons, and the average family size was 3.24 persons. In the county the population is diverse age-wise, with 27.6% under the age of 18, 9.5% from 18 to 24, 31% from 25 to 44, 20.9% from 45 to 64, and 11.1% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 95.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.5 males. In July 2008, its estimated population was 1394154, The racial makeup of the county was 972029 White, 145861 Black or African American, 17511 American Indian, 186240 Asian, 11763 Native Hawaiian, and 60750 from two or more races.
