Saarland borders France to the south and west, Luxembourg to the west and Map of Saarland in GermanyRheinland-Pfalz to the north and the east. Saarland is the 13th largest federal state of Germany by area, with an area of 2,569 square kilometres (993 sq mi). It is second lowest in population among the Germany, with 1.05 million inhabitants. There are 407 inhabitants living in Saarland per square kilometre. It is divided up into 6 administrative districts. Its capital is Saarbrücken.

Saarland PopulationThe population of Saarland is Saarland Population Ageing1,036,598 (2008), of which 532,519 is female and 504,079 is male, total population down 0.63 per cent over a year earlier. This was due to more deaths than births. In 2006, the birth rate was 6.9 per 1000 and death rate was 11.7 per 1000 in 2006.  In 2008, 12.71 percent of the population under the age of 15, fell from 13.02 per cent over a previous year. The proportion of people aged 65 and over rose from 21.59 per cent to 21.78 per cent. Correspondingly, the median age (aged 15-64) of the population rose from 65.40 to 65.51 over the same period. The overall dependency ratio is 526 per 1000 in 2008. The Sex ratio of total population is 0.947 male(s)/female.

Its nominal GDP per capita is €27,300, it is ranked as the 7th largest economy by nominal GDP per capita in Germany, its GDP purchasing power parity (PPP) per capita is €26,500,  ranked 7th among the Germany. Total GDP of Saarland is €28.6 billion, of which service sector contributes around 65.47%, industry 34.32%, and agriculture 0.22%. Its real annual growth rate is 2 in 2006, fell from 2.7 over a previous year. Its income of household was 19,495 Euros per inhabitant in 2006. The unemployment rate has recently decreased from 10.8% in 2005 to 7.3% in 2007.

Saarland EducatiionRegarding to the state road network, in 2008 there were 2,040 km of roadways in Saarland, including 240 km of motorways. In 2007, about 0.65 million passenger cars (equal to 624 cars per 1,000 people) and 0.70 million road good vehicles circulated on the national road network. The state railway network, in 2008 totalled 360 km of which 285 km is electrified. The state inland waterways network comprised 88 km of navigable rivers and channells. In 2006 there were 2 airports, carries 0.38 million passengers, down 14 per cent over a year earlier.

There were 0.58 million tourists arrivals in 2008. In 2007, 0.2 millions pupils and students, 19% of the total population, are in the education system. Of which, percentage of enrollment student are in, 15% pre-primary, 20% primary, 31%  lower secondary, 19% higher secondary, 3% post secondary and 12% tertiary.
