The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 249270, making it the fifth most populous county in Tennessee. The county encompasses an area of 623.94 sq mi (1616 sq km ), of which, 618.91 square miles (1602.97 sq km) of it is land and 5.03 square miles (13.03 sq km) of it is water, makes it the eighth largest by total area in Tennessee.
