Rutherford County is a county located in the United States of North Carolina. The county has a population of 62899 as per the 2000 census data. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 63424, making it North Carolina's 39th largest county. It covers total area of 565.9 square miles (1465.67 square kilometre), of which, 564.12 square miles (1461.06 square kilometre) of it is land and 1.78 square miles (4.61 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the 33rd largest by area in the U.S. state of North Carolina.

It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 63424, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 55388 White, 6974 Black or African American, 145 American Indian, 266 Asian, 25 Native Hawaiian, and 626 from two or more races.
