Russell County is a county in the United States of Virginia. As per the 2000 census, county has a population of 30308 inhabitants. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 28831, making it Virginia's 59th largest county. The county comprises an area of 476.77 square miles (1234.83 kmē), of which, 474.66 square miles (1229.36 kmē) of it is land and 2.11 square miles (5.46 kmē) of it is water, giving it the 34th largest by total area among Virginia's county.

As of the census of 2000, there were 30308 people in the county, organized into 11789 households, and 8818 families residing in the county. The population density was 63.9 people per square mile (24.67/kmē), it is 88th most densely populated county in Virginia. There were 13191 housing units at an average density of 27.8 per square mile (10.73/kmē). The average household size was 2.44 persons, and the average family size was 2.87 persons. In the county Age distribution was 21.2% under the age of 18, 8.6% from 18 to 24, 30.9% from 25 to 44, 26% from 45 to 64, and 13.3% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 97.4 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 96.8 females. In July 2008, its estimated population was 28831, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 28351 White, 295 Black or African American, 31 American Indian, 18 Asian, 1 Native Hawaiian, and 135 from two or more races.
