Russell County is one of the 105 county of Kansas, located towards the Midwestern Region (West North Central) of United States. In 2000, the population was 7370. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 6641, giving it the 55th largest population among Kansas's county. The county encompasses an area of 898.98 square miles (2328.35 kmē ), of which, 884.68 square miles (2291.31 kmē) of it is land and 14.3 square miles (37.04 kmē) of it is water, makes it the 28th largest by total area in Kansas. It is ranks tenth in the size of its inland waterways in Kansas.

According to 2000 Census Bureau, there were 7370 people, 3207 households, and 2021 families living in the county. The population density was 8.3 people per square mile (3.2/kmē), it is the 58th most densely populated county in the U.S. state of Kansas. There were 3871 housing units at an average density of 4.4 per square mile (1.7/kmē). It has an average household size was 2.23 persons, and the average family size was 2.83 persons. In the county the population was spread out, with 22.4% under the age of 18, 5.8% from 18 to 24, 23.3% from 25 to 44, 24.3% from 45 to 64, and 24.1% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 92.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.7 males. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 6641, The racial makeup of the county was 6444 White, 57 Black or African American, 46 American Indian, 24 Asian, 1 Native Hawaiian, and 69 from two or more races.
