The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 50504, It is 25th most populous county in Alabama. It has total area of 647.38 square miles (1676.71 sq km), of which, 641.32 square miles (1661.01 sq km) of it is land and 6.06 square miles (15.7 sq km) of it is water, it is the 42nd largest in terms of geographical size.
