Rush County, Indiana is a county of the United States of Indiana. As of 2000 the population was 18261. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 17297, It is 17th least populous county in Indiana. The county has a total area of 408.62 sq mi (1058.32 kmē), of which, 408.28 square miles (1057.44 kmē) of it is land and 0.34 square miles (0.88 kmē) of it is water, it is the 41st largest by area in the U.S. state of Indiana.

As of the census of 2000, there were 18261 people, 6923 households, and 5047 families living in the county. The population density was 44.7 people per square mile (17.26/kmē), making it the tenth least densely populated county in Indiana. There were 7337 housing units at an average density of 18 per square mile (6.95/kmē). The average household size was 2.6 persons, and the average family size was 3.06 persons. In the county the population was spread out, with 26.7% under the age of 18, 7.5% from 18 to 24, 28.9% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.8% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 96.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.2 males. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 17297, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 16848 White, 145 Black or African American, 31 American Indian, 105 Asian, 4 Native Hawaiian, and 164 from two or more races.
