As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 9096, It is the 28th largest by population in the U.S. state of New Mexico. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 14.38 mi˛ (37.24 sq km), of which, 14.29 square miles (37.01 sq km) of it is land and 0.09 square miles (0.23 sq km) of it is water, makes it the 29th largest by total area in New Mexico.

As of the census of 2000, there were 7698 people in the city, organized into 457 households, and 284 families living in the city. The population density was 538.7 people per square mile (207.99/km˛), it is the 87th most populated city in terms of population density. There were 7584 housing units at an average density of 530.7 per square mile (204.9/km˛). The average household size was 2.22 people, and the average family size was 2.72 people. In the city Age distribution was 20.5% under the age of 18, 5.8% from 18 to 24, 21.9% from 25 to 44, 30.1% from 45 to 64, and 21.6% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 110.7 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 114.9 females. The median age was 46.2 years, The median age of males was 44.9 years, for females the median age was 47.2 years. The racial or ethnic makeup of the city was 87.5% White, 0.29% Black or African American, 2.38% American Indian, 0.31% Asian, 0.03% Native Hawaiian, 2.05% from two or more races and 7.44% Other races.
