Rowan County is one of the 100 county of North Carolina, located towards the Southern Region (South Atlantic) of United States. It is home to over 130340 people (2000 census). It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 139225, making it the 20th most populous county in North Carolina. The county encompasses an area of 523.86 square miles (1356.79 kmē ), of which, 511.31 square miles (1324.29 kmē) of it is land and 12.55 square miles (32.5 kmē) of it is water, it is the 44th largest in terms of geographical size.

Age range in the county was well distributed with 24.7% under the age of 18, 9.1% from 18 to 24, 29.8% from 25 to 44, 22.5% from 45 to 64, and 14% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 97.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.3 males. In July 2008, its estimated population was 139225, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 82.12% White, 15.75% Black or African American, 0.35% American Indian, 0.88% Asian, 0.03% Native Hawaiian, and 0.87% from two or more races.
