As of July 2008, the estimated population was 18889, It is 20th most populous county in New Mexico. It covers total area of 2454.87 mi˛ (6358.08 sq km), of which, 2448.5 square miles (6341.59 sq km) of it is land and 6.37 square miles (16.5 sq km) of it is water, it is the tenth smallest in terms of geographical size.

For every 100 females there were 96.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.5 males. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 18889, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 93.56% White, 2.6% Black or African American, 1.64% American Indian, 0.79% Asian, 0.09% Native Hawaiian, and 1.32% from two or more races.
