Rooks County is one of the 105 county of Kansas, located towards the Midwestern Region (West North Central) of United States. It is home to over 5685 people (2000 census). The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 5136, giving it the 67th largest population among Kansas's county. Its area is just over 895.36 square miles (2318.97 sq km), of which, 888.34 square miles (2300.79 sq km) of it is land and 7.02 square miles (18.18 sq km) of it is water, giving it the 33rd largest by total area among Kansas's county.

As of the census of 2000, there were 5685 people in the county, organized into 2362 households, and 1556 families residing in the county. The population density was 6.4 people per square mile (2.47/kmē), making it the 34th least densely populated county in Kansas. There were 2758 housing units at an average density of 3.1 per square mile (1.2/kmē). The average household size was 2.32 people, and the average family size was 2.93 people. In the county the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 6.4% from 18 to 24, 25.5% from 25 to 44, 21.5% from 45 to 64, and 21.5% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 102 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 106 females. In July 2008, its estimated population was 5136, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 97.33% White, 1.25% Black or African American, 0.55% American Indian, 0.16% Asian, 0.02% Native Hawaiian, and 0.7% from two or more races.
