Rocky Mount City, Nash and Edgecombe counties, North Carolina is a city located in the Southern Region (South Atlantic) of United States. As per the 2000 census, city has a population of 55893 inhabitants. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the city is 57010, It is the 15th largest by population in the U.S. state of North Carolina. It has total area of 35.78 square miles (92.67 sq km), of which, 35.57 square miles (92.13 sq km) of it is land and 0.21 square miles (0.54 sq km) of it is water, it is the 14th largest by area in the U.S. state of North Carolina.

As of the census of 2000, there were 55893 people, 21435 households, and 14682 families living in the city. The population density was 1571.4 people per square mile (606.72/kmē), giving it the 62nd most densely populated city among the North Carolina. There were 24167 housing units at an average density of 679.4 per square mile (262.32/kmē). The average household size was 2.55 and the average family size was 3.11. Age range in the city was well distributed with 27.7% under the age of 18, 8.9% from 18 to 24, 28.5% from 25 to 44, 21.9% from 45 to 64, and 13% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 85.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 79.4 males. The median age is 35.2 years, the median age of male residents at 32.8 and the median age of female residents at 37. The racial or ethnic makeup of the city was 40.92% White, 56.02% Black or African American, 0.35% American Indian, 0.7% Asian, 0.02% Native Hawaiian, 1.07% from two or more races and 0.91% Other races.
