As of July 2008, the estimated population was 74394, It is 23rd most populous county in Virginia. Its area is just over 853.29 sq mi (2210.01 sq km), of which, 851.15 square miles (2204.47 sq km) of it is land and 2.14 square miles (5.54 sq km) of it is water, giving it the fourth largest by total area among Virginia's county.

The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 74394, The racial makeup of the county was 71926 White, 1452 Black or African American, 102 American Indian, 400 Asian, 8 Native Hawaiian, and 506 from two or more races.
