Rockingham City is a city in the Richmond County, North Carolina, United States. According to the latest population census dating back to 2000, the Rockingham City is home to 9672 inhabitants. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 8880, It is the 69th largest by population in the U.S. state of North Carolina. It covers total area of 7.32 square miles (18.96 square kilometre), of which, 7.29 square miles (18.88 square kilometre) of it is land and 0.03 square miles (0.08 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the 112th largest by area in the U.S. state of North Carolina.

As of the census of 2000, there were 9672 people in the city, organized into 3966 households, and 2575 families residing in the city. In the city the population is diverse age-wise, with 25.8% under the age of 18, 7.9% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 21.6% from 45 to 64, and 17.5% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 82.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 76.6 males.
