Rockbridge County is a county located in Virginia, in the Southern Region (South Atlantic) of United States. In 2000, the population was 20808. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 21570, It is 78th most populous county in Virginia. The county comprises an area of 600.98 sq mi (1556.53 sq km), of which, 599.63 square miles (1553.03 sq km) of it is land and 1.35 square miles (3.5 sq km) of it is water, making it Virginia's 13th largest county by total area.

As of the census of 2000, there were 20808 people in the county, organized into 8486 households, and 6072 families residing in the county. The population density was 34.7 people per square mile (13.4/kmē), it is the 18th least densely populated county in the U.S. state of Virginia. There were 9550 housing units at an average density of 15.9 per square mile (6.14/kmē). The average household size was 2.43 and the average family size was 2.84. In the county Age distribution was 22.2% under the age of 18, 7.9% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 27.1% from 45 to 64, and 15.7% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 100.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 98 males. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 21570, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 94.63% White, 3.64% Black or African American, 0.28% American Indian, 0.53% Asian, 0% Native Hawaiian, and 0.91% from two or more races.
