The county encompasses an area of 451.16 miē (1168.5 kmē ), of which, 426.75 square miles (1105.28 kmē) of it is land and 24.4 square miles (63.2 kmē) of it is water, it is the 62nd largest by area in the U.S. state of Illinois. It is ranks sixth in the size of its inland waterways in Illinois.
