The July 2008 population estimate is 90867, making it the 20th most populous county in Virginia. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 251.04 square miles (650.19 kmē), of which, 250.87 square miles (649.75 kmē) of it is land and 0.18 square miles (0.47 kmē) of it is water, makes it the 85th largest by total area in Virginia.

As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 90867, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 82803 White, 5046 Black or African American, 131 American Indian, 1968 Asian, 21 Native Hawaiian, and 898 from two or more races.
