Roane County is one of the 55 county of West Virginia, located towards the Southern Region (South Atlantic) of United States. Roane County had an official population of 15446 in 2000. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 15169, It is 18th least populous county in West Virginia. The county comprises an area of 483.75 square miles (1252.91 square kilometre), of which, 483.57 square miles (1252.44 square kilometre) of it is land and 0.18 square miles (0.47 square kilometre) of it is water, giving it the 18th largest by total area among West Virginia's county.

As of the census of 2000, there were 15446 people in the county, organized into 6161 households, and 4479 families residing in the county. The population density was 31.9 people per square mile (12.32/kmē), making its West Virginia's 17th least densely populated county. There were 7360 housing units at an average density of 15.2 per square mile (5.87/kmē). The average household size was 2.49 and the average family size was 2.91. In the county Age distribution was 23.4% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 26.6% from 25 to 44, 26.5% from 45 to 64, and 14.8% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 98 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96 males. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 15169, The racial makeup of the county was 98.28% White, 0.49% Black or African American, 0.23% American Indian, 0.3% Asian, 0% Native Hawaiian, and 0.7% from two or more races.
