Roane County is a United States county located in the United States of Tennessee. In 2000, the population was 51910. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 53430, making it the 26th most populous county in Tennessee. The county extends throughout a territory of 394.98 square miles (1022.99 kmē ), of which, 360.98 square miles (934.93 kmē) of it is land and 34 square miles (88.06 kmē) of it is water, giving it the 60th largest by total area among Tennessee's county. It is ranks fifth in the size of its inland waterways in Tennessee.

The population density was 143.8 people per square mile (55.52/kmē), it is the 21st most densely populated county in the U.S. state of Tennessee. In the county the population is diverse age-wise, with 22.3% under the age of 18, 7.5% from 18 to 24, 26.9% from 25 to 44, 27.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.1% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 94 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.7 males. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 53430, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 95.19% White, 2.77% Black or African American, 0.23% American Indian, 0.45% Asian, 0.04% Native Hawaiian, and 1.32% from two or more races.
