Ritchie County is one of the 55 county of West Virginia, located towards the Southern Region (South Atlantic) of United States. Ritchie County had an official population of 10343 in 2000. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 10308, making it the 12th least populous county in West Virginia. Its area is just over 453.58 sq mi (1174.77 sq km), of which, 453.51 square miles (1174.59 sq km) of it is land and 0.07 square miles (0.18 sq km) of it is water, it is the 23rd largest by area in the U.S. state of West Virginia.

As of the census of 2000, there were 10343 residents, 4184 households, and 3001 families in the county. The population density was 22.8 people per square mile (8.8/kmē), making its West Virginia's seventh least densely populated county. There were 5513 housing units at an average density of 12.2 per square mile (4.71/kmē). It has an average household size was 2.45 persons, and the average family size was 2.91 persons. Age range in the county was well distributed with 23% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 28% from 25 to 44, 26.1% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 96.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.1 males. The July 2008 population estimate is 10308, The racial makeup of the county was 98.4% White, 0.36% Black or African American, 0.29% American Indian, 0.13% Asian, 0% Native Hawaiian, and 0.82% from two or more races.
