Rio Rancho City is a United States city located in the Sandoval and Bernalillo counties, New Mexico, United States. It is home to over 51765 people (2000 census). Its population was estimated at 79655 in July 2008, making it New Mexico's fourth largest. It has total area of 73.5 mi˛ (190.36 sq km), of which, 73.42 square miles (190.16 sq km) of it is land and 0.08 square miles (0.21 sq km) of it is water, making it New Mexico's second largest by total area.

According to 2000 Census Bureau, there were 51765 people, 457 households, and 284 families residing in the city. The population density was 705 people per square mile (272.2/km˛), it is the 66th most populated city in terms of population density. There were 20209 housing units at an average density of 275.3 per square mile (106.29/km˛). The average household size was 2.7 people, and the average family size was 3.14 people. In the city the population was distributed as follows: 29.2% under the age of 18, 7% from 18 to 24, 32% from 25 to 44, 20.1% from 45 to 64, and 11.7% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.9 males. The median age was 35.1 years, the median age of male residents at 33.8 and the median age of female residents at 36.1. The racial makeup of the city was 78.36% White, 2.66% Black or African American, 2.37% American Indian, 1.46% Asian, 0.17% Native Hawaiian, 4.12% from two or more races and 10.85% Other races.
