Rio Grande County is a United States county located in the United States of Colorado. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 12413 inhabitants. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 11617, It is the 37th most populous county in the U.S. state of Colorado. It is spread over 912.14 mi˛ (2362.43 sq km), of which, 911.6 square miles (2361.03 sq km ) of it is land and 0.53 square miles (1.37 sq km) of it is water, makes it the 19th smallest by total area in Colorado.

As of the census of 2000, there were 12413 residents, 4701 households, and 3417 families in the county. The population density was 13.6 people per square mile (5.25/km˛), making it the 28th most densely populated county in Colorado. There were 6003 housing units at an average density of 6.6 per square mile (2.55/km˛). The average household size was 2.59 and the average family size was 3.08. In the county Age distribution was 28.1% under the age of 18, 8% from 18 to 24, 25.3% from 25 to 44, 23.9% from 45 to 64, and 14.7% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 97.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.4 males. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 11617, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 11056 White, 83 Black or African American, 275 American Indian, 41 Asian, 8 Native Hawaiian, and 154 from two or more races.
