Richmond County is a county located in the United States of Virginia. According to the latest population census dating back to 2000, the Richmond County is home to 8809 inhabitants. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 9144, making it Virginia's 19th smallest county. Its area is just over 216.38 mi˛ (560.42 square kilometre), of which, 191.46 square miles (495.88 square kilometre) of it is land and 24.92 square miles (64.54 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the 89th largest by area in the U.S. state of Virginia.

As of the census of 2000, there were 8809 residents, 2937 households, and 2000 families in the county. The population density was 46 people per square mile (17.76/km˛), it is Virginia's 30th least densely populated county. There were 3512 housing units at an average density of 18.3 per square mile (7.07/km˛). The average household size was 2.4 persons, and the average family size was 2.93 persons. In the county the population is diverse age-wise, with 18.4% under the age of 18, 8% from 18 to 24, 31.8% from 25 to 44, 24.1% from 45 to 64, and 17.7% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 127.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 131.9 males. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 9144, The racial makeup of the county was 5956 White, 3048 Black or African American, 10 American Indian, 50 Asian, 6 Native Hawaiian, and 74 from two or more races.
