Richmond County is one of the 100 county of North Carolina, located towards the Southern Region (South Atlantic) of United States. Richmond County had an official population of 46564 in 2000. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 46005, It is North Carolina's 55th most populous county. Its area is just over 479.58 square miles (1242.11 sq km), of which, 473.98 square miles (1227.6 sq km) of it is land and 5.6 square miles (14.5 sq km) of it is water, making it the 51st largest by size in North Carolina.

As of the census of 2000, there were 46564 people in the county, organized into 17873 households, and 12574 families living in the county. The population density was 98.2 people per square mile (37.92/kmē), making its North Carolina's 50th most densely populated county. There were 19886 housing units at an average density of 42 per square mile (16.22/kmē). The average household size was 2.51 people, and the average family size was 3.01 people. In the county Population was distributed with 25.8% under the age of 18, 10.1% from 18 to 24, 27.7% from 25 to 44, 22.8% from 45 to 64, and 13.6% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 96.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.7 males. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 46005, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 64.88% White, 31.05% Black or African American, 1.93% American Indian, 0.78% Asian, 0.04% Native Hawaiian, and 1.31% from two or more races.
