Richmond County is one of the 62 county of New York, located towards the Northeastern Region (Mid-Atlantic) of United States. The population of county in 2000 stood at 443728 as per the Census data. Its population was estimated at 487407 in July 2008, It is New York's tenth most populous county. Its area is just over 102.5 miē (265.47 kmē), of which, 58.48 square miles (151.46 kmē) of it is land and 44.02 square miles (114.01 kmē) of it is water, makes it the fourth smallest by total area in New York.


As of the census of 2000, there were 443728 people, 156341 households, and 114052 families residing in the county. The population density was 7587.9 people per square mile (2929.7/kmē), making it the fifth most densely populated county in New York. There were 163993 housing units at an average density of 2804.3 per square mile (1082.75/kmē). The average household size was 2.78 people, and the average family size was 3.31 people. In the county the population is diverse age-wise, with 25.5% under the age of 18, 8.5% from 18 to 24, 30.9% from 25 to 44, 23.4% from 45 to 64, and 11.6% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 93.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.6 males. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 487407, The racial makeup of the county was 79.58% White, 11.02% Black or African American, 0.33% American Indian, 7.48% Asian, 0.07% Native Hawaiian, and 1.52% from two or more races.
