Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 202002, giving it the tenth largest population among Virginia's independent city. The independent city has a total area of 62.55 square miles (162 kmē), of which, 60.07 square miles (155.58 kmē) of it is land and 2.48 square miles (6.42 kmē) of it is water, making it the 34th smallest by size in Virginia.
