Richland Parish is a parish located in Louisiana, in the Southern Region (West South Central) of United States. In 2000, the population was 20981. The July 2008 population estimate is 20501, It is the 19th smallest in terms of population. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the parish has a total area of 564.51 square miles (1462.07 sq km), of which, 558.45 square miles (1446.38 sq km) of it is land and 6.05 square miles (15.67 sq km) of it is water, making it the 18th smallest by size in Louisiana.


As of the census of 2000, there were 20981 people in the parish, organized into 7490 households, and 5481 families residing in the parish. The population density was 37.6 people per square mile (14.52/kmē), giving it the 39th most densely populated parish among the Louisiana. There were 8335 housing units at an average density of 14.9 per square mile (5.75/kmē). The average household size was 2.65 persons, and the average family size was 3.14 persons. The population's age distribution was 27.3% under the age of 18, 9.9% from 18 to 24, 26.8% from 25 to 44, 21% from 45 to 64, and 15% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 88.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 84.3 males. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 20501, The racial or ethnic makeup of the parish was 12659 White, 7628 Black or African American, 33 American Indian, 44 Asian, 0 Native Hawaiian, and 137 from two or more races.
