Richland County is one of the 53 county of North Dakota, located towards the Midwestern Region (West North Central) of United States. In 2000, the population was 17998. In July 2008, its estimated population was 16334, It is the ninth most populous county in the U.S. state of North Dakota. Its area is just over 1445.73 square miles (3744.42 kmē), of which, 1436.71 square miles (3721.06 kmē) of it is land and 9.02 square miles (23.36 kmē) of it is water, it is the 17th largest in terms of geographical size.

As of the census of 2000, there were 17998 people in the county, organized into 6885 households, and 4427 families residing in the county. The population density was 12.5 people per square mile (4.83/kmē), it is eighth most densely populated county in North Dakota. There were 7575 housing units at an average density of 5.3 per square mile (2.05/kmē). The average household size was 2.43 people, and the average family size was 3.06 people. In the county the population was spread out, with 24.7% under the age of 18, 14.5% from 18 to 24, 25.6% from 25 to 44, 20% from 45 to 64, and 15.3% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 92.9 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 92.1 females. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 16334, The racial makeup of the county was 95.71% White, 0.51% Black or African American, 2.36% American Indian, 0.28% Asian, 0.12% Native Hawaiian, and 1.02% from two or more races.
