Richardson County is one of the 93 county of Nebraska, located towards the Midwestern Region (West North Central) of United States. As per the 2000 census, county has a population of 9531 inhabitants. The July 2008 population estimate is 8294, It is the 36th largest county by population in the U.S. state of Nebraska. It is spread over 555.95 sq mi (1439.9 kmē), of which, 553.26 square miles (1432.94 kmē ) of it is land and 2.7 square miles (6.99 kmē) of it is water, it is the 25th smallest by area in the U.S. state of Nebraska.

As of the census of 2000, there were 9531 residents, 3993 households, and 2568 families in the county. The population density was 17.2 people per square mile (6.64/kmē), it would be the 28th most densely populated county in the U.S. state of Nebraska. There were 4560 housing units at an average density of 8.2 per square mile (3.17/kmē). The average household size was 2.34 people, and the average family size was 2.95 people. In the county the population was distributed as follows: 25.5% under the age of 18, 5.9% from 18 to 24, 23.8% from 25 to 44, 23.3% from 45 to 64, and 21.5% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 93.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90 males. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 8294, The racial makeup of the county was 7880 White, 23 Black or African American, 240 American Indian, 17 Asian, 0 Native Hawaiian, and 134 from two or more races.
