Rapid City City is a city located in Pennington County, South Dakota, in the Midwestern Region (West North Central) of United States. As of 2000 the population was 59607. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 65491, It is the second largest in terms of population. The city extends throughout a territory of 44.66 mi˛ (115.67 square kilometre ), of which, 44.59 square miles (115.49 square kilometre) of it is land and 0.06 square miles (0.16 square kilometre) of it is water, makes it the second largest by total area in South Dakota. It is ranks 17 in the size of its inland waterways in South Dakota.

As of the census of 2000, there were 59607 people, 23969 households, and 15211 families residing in the city. The population density was 1336.7 people per square mile (516.1/km˛), it is the 51st most densely populated city in the U.S. state of South Dakota. There were 25096 housing units at an average density of 562.8 per square mile (217.3/km˛). The average household size was 2.39 persons, and the average family size was 2.96 persons.
