Rapid City City is a city located in Pennington County, South Dakota, in the Midwestern Region (West North Central) of United States. As of 2000 the population was 59607. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 65491, It is the second largest in terms of population. The city extends throughout a territory of 44.66 mi˛ (115.67 square kilometre ), of which, 44.59 square miles (115.49 square kilometre) of it is land and 0.06 square miles (0.16 square kilometre) of it is water, makes it the second largest by total area in South Dakota. It is ranks 17 in the size of its inland waterways in South Dakota.

As of the census of 2000, there were 59607 people, 23969 households, and 15211 families residing in the city. The population density was 1336.7 people per square mile (516.1/km˛), it is the 51st most densely populated city in the U.S. state of South Dakota. There were 25096 housing units at an average density of 562.8 per square mile (217.3/km˛). The average household size was 2.39 persons, and the average family size was 2.96 persons. In the Rapid City City, 25.3% of the population was under the age of 18, 11.8% were 18 to 24, 28.7% were 25 to 44, 20.9% were 45 to 64, and 13.2% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 96.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.6 males. The median age was 34.8 years, the median age of male residents at 32.7 and the median age of female residents at 36.5. The racial makeup of the city was 50266 White, 579 Black or African American, 6046 American Indian, 594 Asian, 35 Native Hawaiian, 1653 from two or more races and 434 Ohter races.
